What is Jiu Jitsu?

Jiu Jitsu evolved from Japanese judo, a well-known form of martial art, into its own distinct discipline. It focuses on employing leverage rather than strikes to control an opponent, thus eliminating the importance of size and strength in a conflict. Skillfully applied joint locks, submissions, and chokes neutralize any opponents, making jiu jitsu the world’s most effective and efficient form of self-defense.

Jiu Jitsu also differs from many martial arts in that it is practiced as a sport featuring two basic classes of competition: Gi and NoGi (Submission Grappling).

Programs

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is most often practiced with the Kimono (gi). The gi allows for a wider range of techniques due to the manipulation of the sleeves, pants, and jacket. The gi also promotes a slower, more methodical game which forces the user to think more strategically about their attacks and defenses.

At One Jiu Jitsu, our gi classes are divided between Fundamentals and Advanced levels. This allows our instructors to focus on each student’s techniques, thus maintaining the quality of their learning experience.
